Monday reports of the capture of Seif al-Islam Gaddafi by rebel forces in Libya proved false early Tuesday morning. The military leader of the forces loyal to Muammar Gaddafi spoke with journalists who were reporting from the confines of a Gaddafi-controlled Hotel in Tripoli, according to Voice of America.
Seif al-Islam presented himself to foreign journalists confined to the Gadhafi-controlled Rixos Hotel, despite earlier claims by opposition leaders that he was in rebel hands. He then led a convoy through loyalist areas, where television footage showed him pumping his fists in the air as supporters cheered him.
Seif al-Islam claimed that Gaddafi loyalists were still in charge in Tripoli; but, as rebel forces massed their forces to circle the Gaddafi Compound, NATO’s chief spokeswoman Oana Lugenscu remarked, ‘”For the Gaddafi regime, this is the final chapter, they are fighting a losing battle.”
