“I’m not taking a single Latino vote for granted in this campaign,” candidate Barack Obama told a gathering of Hispanic activists of La Raza in 2008. “We’re meeting with Latino leaders across the country. We’re reaching out to Latino organizations to get input on my policy proposals. We’ve got a nationwide Hispanic media strategy. We’re recruiting and training Latino organizers. We’re holding Latino voter registration drives across America. And when I’m President, I’ll be asking many of you to serve at every level of government.”
As evidence mounts that the administration was hip deep in the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearm’s Fast and Furious scheme to sell guns to Mexico’s murderous drug cartels, the president will need to explain why his administration held the lives of Mexicans so cheap.
Holder denied knowing all that much about Fast and Furious when testifying before Congress last May 3. “I probably heard about Fast and Furious for the first time over the last few weeks,” said Holder.
According to the e-mails obtained by the Los Angeles Times, “Holder was told generally about Fast and Furious in the memos in July, October and November 2010, well before he told congressional committees he had first learned of the program.”
Fast and Furious provided weapons recovered at 170 crimes scenes in Mexico and one in Arizona, in which Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry was murdered by a Mexican gang preying on illegal aliens crossing into the U.S.
In an e-mail obtained by CBS News, Deputy Assistant Attorney General Jason Weinstein expressed some concern at the political blow-back that would result once the operation became public, but felt the American people (read media) would be happy the Justice Department had secured “a significant set of prosecutions.”
If the operation delivered the desired results for America’s anti-gun lobby, it was a cause well worth the blood … especially if that blood was confined to Mexico. It never dawned on all the president’s men that their guns would walk their way across our porous border with Mexico and kill an American who swore to defend it – making the administration an accessory to murder.
It’s clear from the Justice Department e-mails that Eric Holder lied when he denied under oath having any knowledge of the Fast and Furious debacle.
It remains to be seen if House Republican’s will take their oversight duties seriously or compromise on the issue.
What did Eric Holder know and when did he know it? And more importantly, did the president sign off on the Fast and Furious effort at “reaching out to Latinos”?
