“But don’t be fooled by the radio, the TV or the magazines
They show you photographs of how your life should be
But they’re just someone else’s fantasy
So if you think your life is complete confusion
Because you never win the game
Just remember that it’s a Grand illusion
And deep inside we’re all the same.
We’re all the same…” (The Grand Illusion – Styx, July 1977)
Inspiration comes in many forms and through many avenues. It might be from a speech, audio sound byte or quote, a book, a song, a movie or a picture. It sometimes comes from a spiritual or circumstantial experience either personal or the testimony of another. Regardless of how one is inspired one fact is absolute. Inspiration is the source of what type of life we create and live. Inspiration comes first from without and is internalized within. Through this internalization come thoughts, words and actions which in turn are expressed outward.
And so through the cycle of inspiration come our experiences which when bound together form our life in its totality. Inspiration is our source of food for the soul. Taken in proper portion we can learn humility, discover purpose, influence others productively and fulfill our respective destinies. Consumed in ignorance, haste and self-centeredness it can lead us down a path of destruction.
It is within the context of this definition of inspiration I found myself chuckling softly the other day upon learning that our nation’s Grand Master of Illusion, President Barack Obama had the truck containing his Teleprompters stolen.
As I pondered the potential gaffes that could come from him relying solely on his own ability to recall truth and facts (which would have actually “inspired” me to watch him speak since I almost always rely on transcripts since I hate watching him) I was drawn to the photograph adjacent to the article. It was a photo taken at some point in time of Obama seen through the reflection of one of these Teleprompters. I immediately thought of the resemblance between the Teleprompter in the photo and the rear view mirrors on our cars and trucks.
Yeah, Teleprompters. Transparent screens that resemble automobile rear view mirrors from which one views his/her edited talking points from one side, those points hidden from their audience seated on the other side. Words rolled off my head almost faster than I could say them…transparency…hidden words…packaged, timed delivery….the illusion that the one speaking is on top of his/her game. Seemed almost prophetic given what we now know about America’s first half-white President. I was, in a word “inspired”.
I turned my attention to the man in the teleprompter mirror. And I was reminded of another moment of inspiration, a moment that led to the election of a virtually unknown and unproven socialistically mentored community organizer to the highest office of our land. Barack Obama. The Grand Illusion personified. And I asked myself (once again) how did he inspire so many to fall for it?
With teleprompter in one hand and best selling books in the other Obama aspired to build an entire campaign around the belief government needed to be rescued from the secret fraternity it had evolved into and returned to one of transparence and electoral inclusion.
Working as practiced as any trained illusionist does Obama worked his sleight of hand moving between the mantras of “change we need” and “hope” painting himself as a pragmatic non-political centralist. Inspired first by the propaganda that led him into community organizing where he would “…organize black folk…for change,” transparency would be the foundation on which Obama would save America from itself. Inspiring.
The illusion worked. 53% of our population drank the Kool-Aid and once sedated, bought into his aspiration to “reclaim government” from the bowels of politics and the special interests that corrupt it and return it to us, its citizens. Transparency. There is only one problem with all this. Obama’s definition of transparency is quite different from Webster’s and our’s. And by our definition we don’t like what we see.
3 years after electing The Grand Illusionist we learn the majority elected a narcissist with delusions of grandeur. We stand almost speechless as we witness Obama’s arrogant disregard for the Constitution he swore to uphold inspired by ineptitude perhaps never before experienced in our Republic within the confines of government. Like the engraving at the bottom of our rear view mirror we look through his Teleprompter and we can now read the warning, “Objects In Mirror Are Closer Than They Appear”. We realize the destruction of our economy, heritage and government is much more possible than just 3 years ago.
But we too are now inspired. Inspired to not follow this man into oblivion but to do whatever necessary to remove him from office and send him into the abyss with Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton and the rest of corrupt Democrats past. But the question remains. And it needs to be answered as to never repeat this mistake. “How could so many have been so duped?” We know the answer. They call it “The Grand Illusion” for a reason.
I thought it appropriate at this juncture to examine this idea of transparency, first though our understanding of the word and then Obama’s, which is two completely different things. Let’s look our understanding first.
A mere 3 days after winning election in 2008 Obama posted on his administration’s “Transition Website” his plan for bringing transparency to government. Among other promises Obama said he would:
- Centralize Ethics and Lobbying Information for Voters: Obama promised to create a centralized Internet database of lobbying reports, ethics records and campaign finance filings in a searchable, sortable and downloadable format.
- Require Independent Monitoring of Lobbying Laws and Ethics Rules: Obama promised to use the power of the presidency to fight for an independent watchdog agency to oversee the investigation of congressional ethics violations so the public can be assured ethics complaints will be investigated
- Create a Public “Contracts and Influence” Database: Obama promised a “contracts and influence” database that would disclose how much federal contractors spend on lobbying, and what contracts they are getting and how well they complete them.
- Expose Special Interest Tax Breaks to Public Scrutiny: Obama promised that any tax breaks for corporate recipients — or tax earmarks — would be publicly available on the Internet in an easily searchable format.
- Sunlight Before Signing: Obama promised he would not sign any non-emergency bill without giving the American public an opportunity to review and comment on the White House Web site for five days.
- Shine Light on Earmarks and Pork Barrel Spending: Obama’s Transparency and Integrity in Earmarks Act promised to disclose the name of legislators who asked for earmarks, along with a written justification, 72 hours before approval by the full Senate.
This fits our definition of transparency. An accounting of actions of those we have elected put into a format we can understand and record for our own peace of mind.
But note these promises had very little to do with Obama’s accountability and everything to do with Congress. Why? The secret truth behind Obama’s illusion is his objective to paint himself as truly representative of what Big Government should look like by portraying Congress as the source of all things evil, meaning politics. In other words, in Obama’s ideology government is not the problem, politicians are the problem. And he is not a politician, he is government. Obama wants us to think his responsibility is to spend his time making sure Congress acts appropriately. This takes our eyes off of him. And for good reason. He had his own agenda, one hidden between the lines of his Teleprompter talking points.
While standing before us (and more importantly his Teleprompter) on a regular basis Obama assails the evil of corporate America, the intolerance of Christianity, the oppression brought by too many military actions. “America is still the greatest county in the world but I am going to rescue it and remake it.” Nobody seems to catch the intellectual contradiction of such a statement. They are too in awe. The politically ignorant swoon. The media pines. Salvation has come upon us all and not a moment too soon.
Never mind that Obama receives over 1/3 of his campaign money from those evil corporate boards he wants to destroy. Ignore the fact Obama was directly involved with ACORN, the organization responsible for pressuring banks to entering the sub-prime lending spree concocted by Bill Clinton, James Johnson and covered up by Barney Frank and Chris Dodd.
Believe it inconsequential Obama’s Treasury Secretary (Timothy Geithner) and Chief Economic Advisor (Larry Summers) were former employees of Goldman Sachs, recipients of large sums of TARP money from which they paid their former employer exuberant bonuses all while Obama decried through his Teleprompter the unethical morality of such audacity. Consider it yesterday’s news that Countrywide worked with ACORN and paid off Chris Dodd to cover for them as they lost billions in the sub-prime scandal.
Ignore the billions wasted on the Cap & Trade industry. Sure Solyndra failed with taxpayer money in the tune of $537 million. But that was on Bush’s watch (even though Bush disapproved it and Obama approved it). There is no conflicting interest between this firm’s President George Kaiser (a big Obama campaign bundler) and our tax dollars being given to him. That is simply a smear tactic of the extremist right.
In this same light there is no conflicting transparecy issue in the awarding of $737 million to Nancy Pelosi’s brother-in-law Ronald Pelosi who heads up yet another solar firm, SolarReserve, LLC. It’s all about the economy and creating a “new America” with gazillions of jobs in the future at stake. It’s justified.
Obama now wants yet more stimulus money to create or save (as in “…save my contributions”) public sector union jobs that funnel money back to Obama’s campaign.
Ah yes, the campaign. The one Obama is not on because he is so busy working on the economy. Home owners (the ones that benefitted from the sub-prime lending scandal) are now being told they won’t have to pay off those nasty mortgages. Veterans are being promised jobs in an economy that have no jobs to offer. Students are being told they won’t have to pay back the $37 million they owe in student loans. Illegal aliens are being promised health care. Gays can marry and screw in the showers and foxholes at military bases.
And since Congress won’t approve Obama’s plan Obama simply bypasses Congress with its evil politicians. Executive Orders will do the trick. No muss, no fuss. Obama is not campaigning. He is saving America because we “…just can’t wait any longer”.
Yes, transparency Obama style. A scandal breaks, Obama puts together his own “investigation team”. Wrongdoing that cannot be covered up is hesitantly declared but never admitted, the guilty are scolded, exonerated or thrown under the bus, Obama appoints his own “Czars” to make sure it doesn’t happen again. Legislation is voted down and Obama bypasses Congress and the will of those who elected him doing what he wants. The Grand Illusion goes on.
I think it is pretty apparent the only thing transparent about Obama is his Teleprompter…at least from the side we are allowed to look through. Indeed “Objects in Mirror Are Closer Than They Appear”. God help us. Within the “Grand Illusion” God is all we have left.
