Lockheed Martin to lay off 123,000 and other defense contractors may follow

Nothing much more to add to this picture. It says it all source: freerepublic.com

President Obama’s administration has asked Lockheed Martin to delay its announcement of the layoffs of 123,000 employees to make the unemployment numbers look much better. Lockheed Martin is one of several defense contractors ready to lay off tens of thousands and hundreds of thousands of people after the election. These numbers may indeed rocket the unemployment figures past 8%.

This is not the change Americans had in mind. (click here)

The layoff notice announcement came by way of Yahoo.com on October 1, 2012 and was quickly buried apparently to fool the voters into believing the economy is much better than represented.

It’s difficult to understate the importance of Lockheed Martin‘s latest announcement on the race for the White House: the defense contractor said on Monday it will not be issuing employee layoff notices to 123,000 workers on Nov. 2—just four days before the presidential election. Amidst all of the super PACs and campaign ads, the threat of telling a sizable chunk of voters in key areas of the country that they could lose their jobs if the election didn’t go Lockheed’s way was one of the most potent examples of corporate electioneering. But the layoff threat was largely unreported outside of Beltway trade publications. Here’s why today’s announcement matters: More…

Basically the bottom may fall out of the economy after November 6, 2012 with hundreds of thousands to be laid off. This would be devastating. Defense contractors agreed to delay the announcements in a sweetheart deal where the White House will pick up any costs associated with these layoffs.

Lockheed, one of the biggest employers in the key battleground state of Virginia, previously warned it would have to issue notices to employees, required by law, due to looming defense cuts set to begin to take effect after Jan. 2 because of the failure of the  Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction — the  so-called Super-committee, which was created to find a way to cut $1.5 trillion from the federal deficit over the next decade. More

This move to delay the announcements of these massive layoffs and cover the costs was totally illegal according to Senator Lindsey Graham. And remember, if you watched the third presidential debates President Obama assured the 70 or so million viewers that these cuts in defense “would not happen.”

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) says that he will do anything he can to block the Obama administration from reimbursing defense contractors for severance costs if the firms don’t send layoff notices to employees. The Obama administration issued guidance Friday that said defense firms’ costs would be covered if they have to layoff workers due to canceled contracts under the across-the-board cuts set to take effect Jan. 2. The layoff notices have become a politically charged issue because they could have come just four days ahead of the election because of a 60-day notice required by federal law for mass layoffs.” More…

There is a greater message here from the American people greater than their horror of how the president plans on destroying our military.

In less than 72 hours we will know if we have a new president or not. It does appear that the majority of Americans are tired of the change President Obama had in mind. Change in the form of crushing unemployment, a stagnant economy, 50 million people on food stamps, 23 million unemployed or under employed, a second world America, gutting the defense sector  etc. are not what Americans had in mind when they heard the president first promise change.  Americans feel that they were scammed in a classic bait and switch fashion.

The greater message that is getting louder and louder to President Obama is that the majority of Americans are saying to him,” Keep your change and leave.”(click here)

This is complete fraud and congress should be on top of this and file charges against Obama and Lockheed Martin for being part of it. This is taxpayer dollars that will used to pay off the lawsuits and is completely unexceptable

Yep, another of o-blamer's doings to make him look good for election. Well if I was the head people at Lockheed I would be posting it NOW and fast. To H*** with o-blamer. He and his administration czars aren't going to pay these peoples rent, house payments, put food on the tables, so he has NO RIGHT to tell them anything. So Lockheed – post it and fast. Actually, by announcing and rescinding the layoff notices Lockheed has already told the world what the plan is. So the cat is out of the bag. Wish this article was seen by 2 million people before next Tuesday so we could tip the scales firmly in Romney's direction. The more people find out about this in Ohio and Virginia the more we tip the odds significantly in our favor.

First off Lockheed has 123,000 workers in total and I think you would agree that even if sequestration were to happen, they will not have to layoff their entire workforce. The real number would be closer to 10,000 (maybe) based on what I am not sure but that was the number Lockheed gave. The reason the number 123,000 has come up is because nobody knows exactly what sequestration will actually do, what contracts will be effected or even what contractors will be effected so they said they would have to send notices to almost their entire workforce to cover their butts in case they had to lay anyone off and comply with WARN notices. The DOL came back and said under the law, mere conjecture does not trigger the obligation for WARN notices. This all was said in June/July 2012. Further more, the DOD has indicated no contract actions on or about 2 January, 2013, and that any action to adjust funding levels on contracts as a result of sequestration would likely not occur for several months after jan 2 leaving plenty of time for WARN notices without wasting States' resources in undertaking employment assistance activities where none are needed and create unnecessary anxiety and uncertainty for workers not to mention driving their stock into the ground which I assure you Lockheed was prob most concerned with.

Lets also point out that nobody expected we would even get to the point of thinking about the actuality of sequestration as it was put in as means of prodding Congress into coming up with a concrete plan for addressing the deficit issue which they haven't been able to do. Remind me again who controls congress? Oh yeah republicans.

You are such an expert. Republicans control the House and Democrats control the senate and the presidency. So your statement is inaccurate. As for the Lockheed layoffs it is amazing how you are so cavalier with other people's lives. Just 10,000 might be fired. Tell that to the 10,000. And it is such a mess that all 123,000 have to be whipped in a lather of fear not knowing what their fates will be for months. Basically it is as if the 123,000 have been lined up in front of a firing squad and they do not know which rifles have bullets in them and which ones don't but they know that over 10,000 have bullets. You speak like a true democrat where people do not matter just ideals.

        November 2, 2012 at 8:03 am

I am not cavalier about any job losses especially as I have friends that work for Lockheed. I am not an expert by any means but I don't not just read headlines and believe everything they say. I also don't assume what I read on the internet is the complete story. Both Republicans and Democrats like to take the best sound bites out of a story and run with it completely ignoring the context or the reasons behind things to make the "other" side look bad. This story has been unfolding since at least June 2012 but coincidentally is just now, a week before the election, being reported all over the internet in mostly conservative blogs and message boards with the headline "Lockheed laying off 123,000" which is completely false..

The fact is the DOD has said all existing contracts have been funded and most experts report any cuts will actually be to projected increases in spending so there is little chance of any layoffs due to this. As we are leaving Afghanistan, have already left Iraq, why should we be increasing defense spending and why is it so hard to accept we may have to cut existing spending to get ourselves out of debt and to balance a budget? I thought the conservative philosophy was to cut spending. If we are to cut spending, all programs should face cuts. If you think you can cut spending and not have layoffs as a result you are being naive.

You sound like the press secretary for the president, but you are busted. You tried to sneak in " Remind me again who controls congress? Oh yeah republicans." Republicans do not control congress. They have control of half of congress. The other half of congress is controlled by the democrats and with the democrats controlling the presidency the democrats do not control a whole lot. For a stickler for details you sure seem to have gone suddenly amnesiac. With respect to spending cuts, isn't it interesting how there are no massive payoff notices in the Federal gov't just the military. Then when you pile in baseline budgeting those cushy federal workers will not make a single sacrifice. Please, you talk a good story about cutting spending but you are not convincing. We need to cut over a trillion out of the budget to get towards a balanced budget and that simply will not happen under Obama. He has so damaged the bond market that no one is buying our bonds. We have to buy the bonds from ourselves. You could cut the entire military budget and would not even be able to make a dent in the budget. As I said you are so cavalier with people's lives but you do not seem to call for equal amounts of layoffs in the Federal government. I love you democrats. You have no standards for yourselves and all the standards for others. Tell me again who controls Congress?

My only point is a mentioning that Republicans have majority control in Congress is that they passed the Budget Control Act (yes the president signed it… I know) but now that there are ramifications for their inability to get the job done, they take no responsibility. I am not even talking about them having to take full responsibility but at least some shared responsibility. I have never said that Democrats or the president aren't responsible as well, those are your assumptions of me. I have never said there shouldn't be equal layoffs in all departments. In fact I said if there are cuts in spending (which are conservative principles that I agree with), there should be equal cuts including defense and then I said with spending cuts, come layoffs. I pointed this out because of the hypocrisy everyone is showing that we MIGHT cut the defense budget and that MIGHT result in layoffs, but there isn't any outcry over potential layoffs or furloughs for civilian government employees. You made assumptions about what I meant but thanks for giving me the opportunity to further explain.

Now back to the subject at hand, I have problems with this article because
    1. Totally misleads readers into believing Lockheed is going to lay off 123,000 employees which would be their entire workforce which is false and serves no purpose than to feed off of peoples fears.
    2. That the governments handling of the situation is being likened to a cover-up of job losses which can't be true as their there never were layoffs to begin with
    3. That somehow everyone in Washington created the situation in the first place but it is only the president and democrats that are responsible. I believe the administration was correct is advising Lockheed not to file 123,000 WARN notices for the reasons I stated in my original post.

What I don't know if your feeling on the subject because the only thing you want to argue about is congress having a republican majority and the possibility of 10,000 layoffs that will most likely never happen due to sequestration. If you want to get back on subject and defend why this article is legit or argue any of the points I made about the article, please do so but I will not get into another argument over who's better republicans or democrats because they are both lacking…. and for the record, I never said which party I was affiliated with or even if I was affiliated with either of the "top 2" parties. Once again you made an assumption.

    • Gil

      November 2, 2012 at 9:36 am

I deal in realities and you deal in fantasy.

There are 23 million unemployed and under employed. Adding another 10,000 is a big deal especially to the 10,000.

It was the president and his lackies who rushed to bury this story about Lockheed, who said they would pick up all expenses associated with these layoffs if Lockheed would agree to forget about the layoffs.

That is what you call a cover up. Obama and Co. does not want this getting out. You simply cannot "assume" that these layoffs will not happen. Do you have inside info.?

Your assertions are riddled with assumptions about what Lockheed may or may not do or what the Federal government may or may not do. You are guilty of assumption syndrome.

With respect to the future let me educate you in reality. Our bond market is dead. No one is buying our bonds. The latest round of QE3 is an unlimited printing proposition. What this means is that every month when the bond auction comes the Fed prints 80% of the cash needed to buy the bonds from itself. This means that there is no economic activity for growth. The economy is dead. This has never ever happened in the history of the US.

The way this is reflected is in the price of gold. The more gold goes up the worse things get. When Obama was elected gold was at $700 per ounce now it is at $1700 and the economy is in shambles. Gold is going to $3500 which is a disaster.

What this means is that employers in the private sector will be gutted including Lockheed and those 10,000. That you can count on. For you to say they probably won't get laid off is downright ignorant against the backdrop of a collapsing economy. No economy can thrive on an unstable currency. They all collapse.

Sooner or later the bond market is going to lose value no matter how much the Fed buys from itself and interest rates will go up which is going to crush the economy and the government. That is reality.

Lockheed putting out 123,000 potential layoff notices is a wake up call to what is coming. Lockheed got a lot of visibility but employers all over the country are laying off employees. Even the ADP report is substantially at odds with the jobs report where ADP reported a loss of 400,000 jobs but that was buried too.

The Lockheed story is part of a greater trend against the backdrop of QE3 and the bond market. Again the world has such little confidence in the US that it is no longer buying our bonds. If you understood this bond business you would not be arguing mindlessly about the details of Lockheed. There is a very real potential that defense spending could be cut in half because of the buying power of the dollar.

You sound like a person hired to troll blogs in order to argue a point of view. If you understood the currency aspect of the dollar you would not be arguing this way. We are in so much trouble financially that Lockheed will indeed have to make some very, very serious choices.

Just came across this article, and researched the number used in the headline and lead sentence. I would still like to see your response to the fact that 123,000 is the total LM workforce, not the number who might be laid off.

Whether sequestration occurs in January, or May-we will see job losses of 207,000 in Virginia alone according to the experts. It may only be 10K at Lockheed, but the law requires that these notices go out. Get past the numbers, and ask yourself…why did the administration ask for them to hold off on those numbers, and then promise money to cover costs if they cooperated vs compliance with the codified law. That is the real problem…we are being lied to on every level. There is no integrity or honesty in the white house, whether it is on the subject of Sequestration, Mitt Romeny's character, or potential job losses regarding the sequestration. According to the president, he has created 5+million jobs. Not true. In fact, according to the Bureau of labor statistics, the Labor Participation rate is 58.4 million people. Many of those people work 25 hours per week, which prior to Obama was considered part time. That is now counted as full time. Meanwhile…the day he took office, the Labor Participation rate was 62.5 million people. There are other factors that relate to this as well, that put the lie to his claims of job creation. The day he took office, we hade 301.7 million residents according to the US Census Bureau. Today, we are closing on 308 million. The real unemployment rate is scandalously high, and we are lied to about it, while Obama's white house commands defense contractors to lie to the American People, as well as their own employees, and plans to make US pay for that series of lies. Never mind the human cost!

      November 2, 2012 at 12:06 pm

I could not say this better myself. Very well summarized. The whole point is that Obama and company are lying, destroying people's lives and getting people killed: Fast and Furious, Benghazi, Afghanistan, defense layoffs. Millions of people will not be able to recover as long as they live. They might get other jobs or get on with their lives but millions of people will not recover their careers or assets. That is the whole point. Democrats-liberals-rinos live in the world of ideals where people do not matter. I deal in reality where do overs or taking a flunked class do not exist.

The cat is out of the bag. Done. Now, they want to tap dance and confuse you. They want to take the focus off the issue and tell you about the terrible Republicans that got us to this point! Well, there are two issues here: 1. The sequestration: there is one person to blame for this, and one person only! The big O! He does not know, has not known in the past, and will NEVER know how to negotiate successfully with ANYBODY whose views oppose his! Heck, he is not even capable of getting along with them. He is a whining baby, who if he does not get his way, has a tantrum, and starts throwing blame around. This is not a leader. This is not a president. He is more suited for a job as a social worker! 2. The coverup of the impending layoffs. Yep, proven. Fact! Nothing more needs to be said about this it is as obvious as our 16T debt and our twice-downgraded credit rating. OBVIOUS AND INDESPUTABLE!

So all of Lockheed Martin employees, as well as BOEING and others if they were to comply with the WARN act. But the Labor Department decided they would pick up the fines and litigation cost (The TaxPayerss) would pay for it.

Thus instead of the WARN acts 60 or 90 notice, then the cuts take place on January 2nd due to Sequestration there will be no warning, simply lay off notices will go out to those impacted.

Some of the comments on this article were that these threatened layoffs were not going to happen. As we can see it is after the election and they are happening even after the president said they would not happen in the third debate.
