The sinister fact about censorship … is that it is largely voluntary … Unpopular ideas can be silenced, and inconvenient facts kept dark, without the need for any official ban … because of a general tacit agreement that ‘it wouldn’t do’ to mention that particular fact. It is not exactly forbidden to say this or that or the other, but it is ‘not done’ to say it … Anyone who challenges the prevailing orthodoxy finds himself silenced with surprising effectiveness …
On April 27, 2011, President Obama and the White House issued what they claimed was Obama’s “Long-Form Birth Certificate” from the state of Hawaii.
That document, as well as his Selective Service registration card, have long since been 100% proven by credible investigators to be forgeries — and very poor ones at that. Yet, in all the discussions about the importance of character in our presidential candidates during the campaign, that “smoking gun” was never discussed except on back pages of the Internet.
During 2012 campaign meetings and discussions, whenever I brought that question up, the usual reply went something like this:
<< Well, we don’t want to talk about that. Yes, the documents are forgeries, and it speaks badly for Obama’s character, but the Left has so tarred everyone who discusses it with that damned epithet “birther” that it could actually hurt Romney’s chances for re-election. People still like the president and don’t want to think bad things about him. We should play it smart, stick to the economy, and stay away from attacking the president’s character. >>
I even got a reaction like the one above from an Arizona county attorney and a high-level campaigner for a conservative Republican Congressman.
I wonder what those folks think now. The Democrat campaign actually had the gall to present Obama as the candidate with superior character. Had the situation been reversed, one can only imagine how much “hay” the Democrats would have made out of a forgery issued from a Republican White House.
I suppose it’s all “water over the dam” now … or is it?
Deliberate forgeries issued from the White House? Am I the only one still appalled by Obama’s debasement and defilement of the office of President of the United States? Couldn’t he at least have had enough respect for American citizens’ intelligence to present better-quality forgeries? Good grief!
If we just let this one go, what will the Left do next? Or has it already emboldened them to try deceptions like the ongoing (alleged) Benghazi deceptions? And why are we letting the forgeries go at all? Are we perhaps so embarrassed at not pursuing the issue earlier that we don’t want to call attention now to our own negligence?
We nearly impeached Richard Nixon for lying about a burglary cover-up and Bill Clinton for perjury related to a personal affair with an intern. Might not forgery be an impeachable offense for Obama (among, arguably, a long list of other offenses)? Might someone in the media one day just ask Jay Carney if the White House still stands by its issued documents as genuine?
Or shall we all just go on “not talking about it” in good Orwellian, voluntary, self-censorship style?
