People of the government, by the government, for the government. That is what has become of “We the People.” As Congress’s inability to deal with the fiscal cliff and debt-ceiling issues prove, saving bloated government, not the liberty and financial solvency of 311 million Americans, is Washington’s priority.
A microcosm of the problems facing America is playing out in France. France’s Constitutional Council declared Socialist President Francois Hollande’s 75% income tax on those earning above $1 million illegal. However, had the plan passed constitutional muster, it would not have done much to save the Fifth Republic from its fiscal woes. “While the tax plan was largely symbolic and would only have affected a few thousand people, it has infuriated high earners in France, prompting some such as actor Gerard Depardieu to flee abroad. The message it sent also shocked entrepreneurs and foreign investors, who accuse Hollande of being anti-business,” said ABC News.
“Symbolic” remedies don’t deal with hard realities. But they are the crack cocaine of democracy. And American voters are addicted. As a Wall Street Journal analysis showed, if every billionaire and millionaire in America were stripped of all their assets, the one-time gain for Washington would total around $989 billion. That wouldn’t cover this year’s budget deficit. But crack-addicted Americans love the “symbolic” contact high. That symbolism is nothing less than mindless revenge.
My objection to what calls itself the left is its infantile rage – eating the rich, regulating our every waking hour and forcing a once free people into a totalitarian health care regime. It is obsessed with forcing individuals to conform to its vision of utopia. To make its vision more palatable, it must create scapegoats against which the crack-addicted must seek revenge.
Revenge is the left’s excuse for failing to succeed in a free society. The use of force, you see, is the last refuge of underachievers. Can a nation sustain itself on revenge alone?
Underachieving revenge-seekers simply fail to transcend the darker aspects of their character, forcing the normal and well adjusted into the cattle cars. The left’s twisted worldview is not a product of politics but a self-destructive character flaw. That is why it was inevitable Hitler found himself in a Berlin bunker with a pistol in one hand and a cyanide tablet in the other.
Senator Mike Lee describes the rise and fall of six of the Constitution’s most indispensible provisions, making vividly clear how nearly every abuse of federal power today is rooted in neglect of this founding document.
