California Deals with ‘Socially Unfit’ Gun-Owners

Rugenwalde, 1943

By Mr. Curmudgeon:

California has long been a favored laboratory for Progressive experimentation. The Golden State led the nation in forced sterilizations; a Progressive effort, known by the name Eugenics, to cleanse the human gene pool of those the movement considered “socially unfit.” According to CNN, 20,000 Californians were subjected to forced sterilizations between 1909 and 1963.

In 1934, Charles M. Goethe – entrepreneur, philanthropist, conservationist and founder of the Eugenics Society of Northern California – told a colleague, “You will be interested to know that your work has played a powerful part in shaping the opinions of the group of intellectuals who are behind Hitler in this epoch-making program. Everywhere I sensed that their opinions have been tremendously stimulated by American thought . . . I want you, my dear friend, to carry this thought with you for the rest of your life, that you have really jolted into action a great government of 60 million people.” The reference was in regard to Nazi Germany’s Law for the Prevention of Hereditarily Diseased Offspring, modeled on California’s sterilization program. Hitler later expanded the Third Reich’s drive for race-purification beyond Progressive California’s wildest dreams. The Holocaust was the result.

Last Thursday, California’s Democratically-controlled Senate unveiled that Progressive state’s latest measure targeting  “socially unfit” citizens – lawful gun-owners. According to the San Jose Mercury News, the proposed law requires a permit to purchase ammunition; bans shotguns “with a revolving cylinder” with “shotgun-rifle combination”; makes the borrowing of a weapon illegal; requires gun-owners to earn a yearly handgun safety certificate; and may include “taking the state’s 166,000 registered assault weapons from their owners,” said the Mercury News.

“History teaches that all conquerors who have allowed their subject races to carry arms have prepared their own downfall by doing so,” said Adolf Hitler in April of 1942, “Indeed I would go so far as to say that the underdog is a sine qua non for the overthrow of any sovereignty. So let’s not have any native militia or police. German troops alone will bear the sole responsibility for the maintenance of law and order.”

And so, Progressivism – at least for Californians – comes full circle.
