By Mr. Curmudgeon:
The left not only lacks common sense, a sense of humor, but a sense of irony as well. At the lefty website Democratic Underground, there is an advertisement on the right side of the web page urging readers to sign a petition to “demand [Sarah] Palin apologize for claiming the US is ‘stockpiling bullets’ for use against America.” Directly to the left, a photo shows one of 2,717 armored vehicles purchased by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) under the headline, “Homeland Security on the move – is there a war stateside that I am unaware of?”
One reader contributed this relevant response, “Somewhere, someone is buying soda with food stamps; that’s what we should be upset about.”
While the childish left frets over sugary soft drinks, the adults among us should be concerned that DHS is adding a fleet of armored vehicles manufacturer Navistar Defense says are built to meet the challenges posed by “extreme theaters like Afghanistan,” whose “V-shaped hull helps deflect blasts out and away from the crew and its armoring … customized to meet any mission requirement.” The reasons, I fear, are economic.
Last September, the Congressional Budget Office reported that America’s debt-to-GDP ratio reached 70%. However, a recent World Economic Forum report contradicted this, saying America’s debt currently stands at 91.6% of GDP.
According to David Greenlaw, an economist at the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business, “… Countries with debt above 80% of GDP and persistent current-account deficits are vulnerable to a rapid fiscal deterioration as a result of these tipping-point dynamics. Such feedback is left out of current long-term U.S. budget projections and could make it much more difficult for the U.S. to maintain a sustainable budget course.”
Meanwhile, the globe’s major credit-rating agencies are poised to downgrade America’s credit worthiness – most likely after the next debt-ceiling hike.
DHS is getting ready. Recent bulk purchases of ammunition (many of them hollow-point), and the addition of blast-proof armored vehicles, shows Janet Napolitano’s DHS is expecting unprecedented social unrest.
I fear the reason Washington’s Republican leaders have been so docile in response to Obama’s assaults on the economy and individual liberty is that they are fully aware of the economic calamity to come. They may have made the cynical decision to stand by and watch the president and his Democrats take the blame for the “tipping-point dynamics” of Obama-geddon.
