Donald Trump taps Tea Party Republican Mick Mulvaney as budget director

President-elect Donald Trump has tapped South Carolina Rep. Mick Mulvaney — a deeply conservative proponent of federal spending cuts — as his White House budget director, several transition team officials announced Friday.

“He’s a tremendous talent, especially when it comes to numbers and budgets,” Trump said in a statement to the New York Times confirming Mulvaney’s appointment.

The Republican congressman was elected to the House Budget Committee after riding the 2010 Tea Party wave and inching out a veteran Democrat to represent the Palmetto State’s fifth district.
