I find it rather strange, that when convenient, President Obama likes to invoke the memory of late President Reagan.
According to Fox News, President Obama stated that Ronald Reagan would be “rolling over in his grave” at the support, Putin has among some conservatives. He made his comments in reference to a survey of supporters of President-elect Trump. This survey showed that 37 percent of his supporters also have support for Vladimir Putin. Well, we know how accurate polls and surveys are. We should look at the policies of Ronald Reagan when assessing the allegation of “rolling over in his grave.” In particular, we should look at how he felt we should deal with the, then, Soviet Union.
President Reagan was against the prevailing policies of the time: containment and détente.
The objective of containment was to stop the spread of communism. Immediately after World War II, the Soviet Union invaded Germany and swallowed Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. Soon after, many other countries would fall to communist control. President Truman enacted the Truman Doctrine, which outlined the containment policy. President Reagan did not completely hate “containment” but instead of containing communism, he wanted to spread freedom. On the other hand, he felt Détente was a failed policy. Détente was the idea that we should ease tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union. This policy started in 1972 with President Nixon and Continued through the Presidency of Carter.
President Nixon visited Moscow and met with secretary-general of the Soviet Communist party, Leonid I. Brezhnev in May of that year.
There they signed, known as the SALT (Strategic Arms Limitations Talks) treaty. President Reagan felt Détente weakened our stance with the Soviet Union. He believed in peace through strength. He felt that through a strong economy and a strong military we could ultimately end the Cold War. In his Reagan Doctrine, he stated:
“Our military strength is a prerequisite to peace, but let it be clear we maintain this strength in the hope it will never be used, for the ultimate determinant in the struggle that’s now going on in the world will not be bombs and rockets, but a test of wills and ideas, a trial of spiritual resolve, the values we hold, the beliefs we cherish, the ideals to which we are dedicated.”
Obama denounces President-elect Trump as being unfit. His claim that Ronald Reagan would be “rolling over in his grave” at the supporters of President-elect trump, is baseless. After all, President-elect Trump has espoused many of the ideas of Ronald Reagan. For example, during his “Thank You Tour” President-elect Trump has pushed for peace through strength, pointing to the economy and military. He also stated, “We are building this up great military power in the hope we never have to use it we believe strongly in peace through strength. Our military is going to be modern and powerful again.” President Reagan did call the Soviet Union, “the evil empire,” but he did push for better relations with Russia.
President Obama, stop invoking Reagan for your gain. You have it wrong.
You be the judge. Would President Reagan be rolling over in his grave over Trump supporters?
